If you do go to church, don’t participate. Don’t read the Bible and don’t go to church. If you want to make sure that you never get close to God again, then don’t spend any time with him. So if you want to move further away from God, follow these five pieces of advice: Bad Advice #1: Neglect Your Time with God Matthew 13:23 The seed that fell on good soil represents those who truly hear and understand God’s word and produce a harvest of thirty, sixty, or even a hundred times as much as had been planted!īy looking at some bad advice, we can get a better idea of why we’ve drifted from God. Finally, the seed that fell in good soil represents those who listen to and obey God’s word and experience tremendous growth. The seed that fell among thorns represents people who initially respond to God’s word, but get swept away from it by the cares of life. The seed in the rocky soil represents people who joyfully hear God’s word, but fall away when they are made fun of for following Jesus. The seed scattered on the path represents those who hear God’s word, but have no interest in it. These four places represent the different ways that the human heart responds to God. The parable describes a farmer who scattered seed in four different places. This is often called the parable of the sower (Matthew 13:3-23). Jesus told a parable that helps us determine if we are drifting from God or not. The good news is that if you find yourself in this situation, it’s possible to get close to him again. If you’ve drifted from God, then you may have less passion for God’s Word, less interest in church, and less desire to be part of a small group. As we neglect our fellowship with Jesus Christ even for a short while, the drifting begins. Such drifting in the Christian life rarely happens instantly. Instead, we allow ourselves to subtly drift away from Him. Though sometimes we may feel far from Him, He never leaves us and He never moves. One day as he was driving, he turned to her and said, “But, dear, I’ve never moved.” We’re the same way with God. There is a classic story about the wife who complained that her husband never sat next to her in the car anymore. No matter which way I swam or body surfed, the tide pulled me down the shoreline-and in reality I had no idea how far I drifted until I looked back at the shore. It looked easy until you were in the water. On certain days, the lifeguards would set out two flags on the beach to stay between so that people wouldn’t drift too far down the shoreline. Often I would swim or body surf out in the shallow part of the water. When I was a teenager growing up in Southern California, I use to go to the beach weekly. The person who drifts from common sense will end up in the company of the dead.
